Print Works – Screen Printing

The Print Works studio teaches youth participants all the skills required to produce professional-quality, hand printed, screen printing for apparel, posters, and signs. These skills include artistic concepts like design, color separation and image manipulation, craft-oriented techniques like screen preparation, selecting the proper ink and proper printing, and technical knowledge of screen resolutions and screen exposure.

Youth design and print garments and other items for clients, for the Riverzedge line of clothing and merchandise called Storehouse, and sometimes for themselves. The majority of the studio’s time is spent fulfilling orders from the many clients they service.

Green Design Lab – Sustainable Design & Products

The Green Design Lab is a diverse and challenging studio, where participants execute a wide variety of both physical and conceptual projects. Saying that we study the STEAM elements (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) doesn’t come close. Sociology, history, language arts and all aspects of entrepreneurship inform our product development and marketing work, and good, old-fashioned physical labor keeps us down-to-earth.

Literally, everything falls within our field of study. “Green” means natural, that is, everything that’s not made by humans. “Design” means human-made, that is, everything that’s not from nature. “Lab” means a place of work, study and experimentation. Put it all together, and the GDL is a place where we study everything in the world, whether it comes from nature or is made by humans.

We also manufacture eco-friendly products, so participants become familiar with manufacturing processes and methods. We are obsessive about quality in our products, and that means being obsessive about our process. Many first-time “Greensters” are amazed at how difficult it is to manufacture a top-quality product.

Design Works – Graphic Design

The Design Works youth participants become expert in basic and advanced graphic design skills, and they use these skills to produce work for client projects as well as for themselves. Much of the work relies on the Adobe® Creative Suite® of software tools, with a primary emphasis on Illustrator®, Photoshop® and InDesign®.

Not all skills are computer-based. Participants learn core graphic design concepts of layout, color composition, typography, information-oriented graphics and more. As they work on client projects, they also learn about visual branding and marketing as they seek to express each client’s unique qualities through their output.
